The history of Takoyaki begins with Akashiyaki (明石焼き), a very similar dish (dipped in dashi) created in Akashi, Hyōgo.
Legend has it that the snack came about thanks to an excess of egg yolks from the manufacture of hair decorations, and the local abundance of octopuses.
